What is gender? How do we relate to it? How do we talk about it? Does it mean the same thing for everyone?

To start answering these questions, I conducted interviews with people throughout the Midwest. Many individuals had strong feelings about their gender identity and what society expected from them. I was also struck by how hungry many people were for a platform to talk about their experiences with gender. I wanted to expand these conversations into something bigger.

Between 2011 and 2013 I conducted over 50 interviews with people from all over Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. I’m currently illustrating these stories into a 300~ page graphic novel called “FINE: a comic about gender”

FINE is a comic that explores gender from multiple personal perspectives. My aim is to spark and encourage conversations about gender from all people. This is not a book about gender theory; rather it is about how people live their lives. Opinions and perspectives in the book contradict, inform, and intersect with one another to create a gender narrative that is as complex and contradictory as its topic.
